You can look up your Utah home's wildfire risk for free on the Utah Wildfire Risk Assessment Portal (UWRAP), run by the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (FFSL). It matters for insurance because Utah law now ties how insurers classify high risk wildfire areas to the state's map. Knowing where your home stands before your renewal gives you time to ask questions; our renewal check can remind you ahead of that date.
If you have already been non-renewed, see what happens after a Utah non-renewal notice. For one county's numbers, see Park City and Summit County non-renewals.
The tools on the state portal
According to the UWRAP home page:
- Risk Explorer. FFSL calls it the primary way it shares wildfire risk information with the public. It has a Basic Viewer, open to anyone, and an Advanced Viewer that requires an account. The portal lists a simplified "What's Your Risk" tool for homeowners in the Basic Viewer.
- High Risk WUI Properties map. A map and downloadable dataset of the high risk wildland urban interface (WUI), the areas where homes meet wildland vegetation. The dataset listing says it is built from satellite imagery, FFSL vegetation and fuel maps, housing density, slope and aspect, and buffers around structures.
- Fire History Tracker. The Fire History Tracker maps wildfires over 10 acres back to 2017, including the ignition point, area burned, and structures threatened or destroyed.
How to look up your address
- Open the Risk Explorer Basic Viewer.
- Use the viewer's address search to find your property.
- Look at the risk information shown for your location. FFSL says the high risk WUI boundary is viewable on the portal once finalized.
- Optionally, open the Fire History Tracker to see past fires near you.
FFSL's disclaimer says the information is provided as is, for informational purposes, and that property boundaries are approximate. Treat the map as a starting point for questions, not a final answer about any one home.
Why this matters at renewal
Under Utah Code Section 31A-22-1310, in effect since January 1, 2026:
- An insurer deciding whether a property is high risk WUI property may only use the boundary in FFSL's wildfire risk mapping tool. Insurers may use other fire hazard data for rating and underwriting only within the rules the section sets.
- If an insurer non-renews or cancels WUI property because of wildfire risk, the notice must state the facts behind the decision with reasonable precision.
- If an insurer raises a WUI property's premium by more than 20% because of wildfire risk, it must give you the facts behind that decision when you ask.
Separately, H.B. 41 (2026) delayed the county fee on high risk WUI structures to January 1, 2027 and set up a way for counties to ask FFSL to change the boundary. FFSL's community preparedness page says you can request a lot assessment and that lowering your fee will depend on completing the mitigation steps an assessment lists. As of October 12, 2026, FFSL's page also has a waitlist form for lot assessments "once the program goes live" and does not list fee amounts.
What homeowners can do with the result
- Bring it up with your agent before renewal and ask how your insurer views your location.
- Review the FFSL preparedness checklist and the national Firewise USA program, which FFSL points to for mitigation steps.
- Keep the dates of any notices you get. If you are non-renewed, Utah law gives you the right to ask for the reason in writing (see our guide).
CoverageCheckin does not assess property risk or give insurance advice. Set a reminder with our renewal check, and if you have been dropped, our non-renewal page can connect you with a licensed Utah agent.
